Coalition Dynamics
This year, BJP is in the limelight for depending on its allies in the coalition. For they are the ones who have enabled them get enough seats to form government, where TDP has garnered 16 seats while JDU had 12 only making them “kingmakers”.
Formation of the New Government
After election results were announced, Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned to President Droupadi Murmu, as is the tradition. The President requested Modi and his council of ministers to stay on until a new government is constituted.
A Day of Strategic Meetings
Today, the NDA leaders will meet at Modi’s house to talk about how they will form a new government and what their next political moves should be. Among the attendees are some important people such as Chandrababu Naidu from TDP and Nitish Kumar of JDU.
Meanwhile, a meeting is being held by the Congress-led INDIA bloc to plan the way forward after it got 231 seats. Competition was stiff for BJP-based NDA because of the unexpected good showing of the bloc.
Modi’s Address to the Nation
Modi thanked the people for their mandate during his address in the BJP headquarters. This triumph attests to the robustness of India’s constitution and democracy. Furthermore, he talked about the party’s aspiration- “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” (Together with All, Development for All) alongside a determined effort at creating a developed India.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the victory, the BJP’s reduced tally compared to previous elections signifies a shift in voter sentiment. The party, which had aimed for at least 370 seats, will now need to navigate governance with a stronger dependence on its allies. Modi’s victory margin in his own constituency, Varanasi, was also significantly reduced from previous years, indicating a need for introspection.
Opposition Gains Ground
The Congress party seat count had increased massively to 99 from 52 in 2019, then 44 in 2014. A significant upward trajectory was seen by both the Samajwadi Party (SP) as well as the Congress in Uttar Pradesh State where the BJP has always had its own way. BJP’s seats in UP had dropped down from 62 to 33.
